Republican Party of Texas Chairman Tina Benkiser Steps Down

Republican Party of Texas Chairman Tina Benkiser announced today that she is stepping down after nearly six years in office. Chairman Benkiser made the announcement at the quarterly meeting of the State Republican Executive Committee at party headquarters in Austin.
“I stand before you today with very mixed emotions,” Benkiser said. “Effective October 5, I’m stepping down as chairman.”
Benkiser became chairman of the Republican Party of Texas in October 10, 2003 and has presided over an era of unprecedented growth for the party across the state. Republicans went from the minority party to holding all statewide offices, a majority of both houses of the state legislature, and the party is close to capturing a majority of offices at the local level. Benkiser has won re-election as chairman in 2004, 2006, and 2008 and was poised to win re-election at the RPT convention next year.
Benkiser’s resignation takes effect October 5, 2009. She leaves the RPT to join Governor Rick Perry’s campaign for re-election as a senior adviser.
